New Westminster has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 10 Most Generous Communities on GoFundMe in 2024, ranking 10th on the annual list that celebrates communities with the highest number of donors per capita.
With over 4,100 donors this year, the city achieved a per capita donor rate of 5.24%, demonstrating the remarkable generosity of its residents. GoFundMe highlighted New Westminster as a beacon of kindness, underscoring the incredible power of communities supporting one another.
A notable example of this community spirit is the campaign organized by local resident Kat Ingraham, who has raised over $27,000 to help her father, Kevin, following a tragic spinal injury while traveling. The funds have enabled the family to secure critical medical care and equipment, including a custom wheelchair and hospital bed.
“Sharing his story and receiving support helped us during our greatest time of need,” Ingraham said. “The generosity of our community gave us some relief, knowing we could provide Kevin with everything he needed after his accident.”
Across Canada, GoFundMe users raised $280 million in 2024, an 8% increase compared to the previous year. Canadians supported a wide range of causes, from health care to local businesses and cultural events, with one in 13 adults donating through the platform.
Victoria, BC, was named the Most Generous Community in Canada for the second consecutive year, with a per capita donor rate of 21.3%. Other top-ranking cities included North Vancouver, St. John’s, and Vancouver.
Since 2010, GoFundMe has facilitated over $30 billion in global fundraising, enabling communities to rally together in times of need and celebrate the unbreakable spirit of solidarity.
The Brad Turner Quartet, a cornerstone of the Vancouver jazz scene, will bring their dynamic sound to the Anvil Theatre on January 28, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. Known for their masterful blend of original compositions, interpretations of jazz standards, and an exciting mix of free improvisation and structured grooves, the group promises an unforgettable evening of music.
Led by the award-winning Brad Turner on piano, the quartet features Darren Radtke on bass, Bernie Arai on drums, and Jack Duncan on percussion. These accomplished musicians collectively boast experience performing and recording with jazz luminaries such as Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Gary Bartz, Bill Frisell, and John Scofield, among others.
Turner, a respected figure in Canadian jazz, founded the Brad Turner Quartet after returning to Vancouver upon graduation. The ensemble has since become one of Canada’s most revered jazz groups. Turner also leads the Brad Turner Trio, a long-standing group where he primarily performs as a pianist.
In addition to his quartet and trio, Turner was a founding member of the jazz fusion group Metalwood. Formed in 1997, Metalwood played together until 2003, reuniting in 2016 to release their Juno Award-winning album Twenty, celebrating their 20th anniversary.
Don’t miss the chance to experience the Brad Turner Quartet’s interactive and innovative approach to jazz in an intimate theatre setting.
