Waste Knot
In the heart of New Westminster, Mallory, founder of WasteKnot, is redefining what it means to plan celebrations with the environment in mind. Since launching her business in 2022, this former musical theatre performer has combined her creative talents with her passion for sustainability to create memorable, eco-conscious events.
"Going green isn't a trend, it's just normal now," says Mallory, whose journey to becoming an event planner began while catering extravagant New York City weddings. Witnessing excessive food and plastic waste at these lavish affairs sparked an idea: what if event planners used their influence to reduce environmental impact without sacrificing celebration?

After an injury ended her performing career, Mallory found herself settling in New Westminster with her husband. The vibrant community of female entrepreneurs embraced her, giving her the confidence to launch WasteKnot.
What makes WasteKnot unique is Mallory's collaborative approach. Rather than taking complete control of an event, she works alongside clients to make environmentally conscious choices that align with their priorities. For food-loving couples, this might mean crafting menus featuring ocean-wise seafood or plant-based options, ensuring minimal leftovers, and arranging for any excess to be repurposed.
"I don't want to just plan someone's wedding and have them not be involved," Mallory explains. "We do it together—it's a win-win for everyone."
Beyond weddings, Mallory plans celebrations for local small businesses. Her environmental expertise allows her to suggest simple changes that make significant differences. Many of these eco-swaps save money, too! She shares this knowledge through her social media and blogs, hoping to educate and inspire others, especially those in the event industry.

The most rewarding aspect of her work? The lasting connections formed with clients. "Many of my clients end up becoming good friends," she says, noting that relationships often continue long after the final invoice.
Currently booking weddings for 2026, Mallory offers reasonable hourly rates and transparent contracts. As a certified wedding planner with the Wedding Planning Institute of Canada, she brings professionalism and expertise to every event.
Whether you're planning a wedding or business celebration, WasteKnot offers a way to celebrate life's special moments while respecting our planet. You can reach Mallory through her website at wasteknot.ca or email at [email protected].
In a world where excessive consumption often overshadows special moments, WasteKnot reminds us that the most memorable celebrations can also be mindful ones.

Vagabond Players | April 24 – May 11 | Bernie Legge Theatre, New Westminster
Four women. One revolution. Infinite sass.
Get ready for a theatre experience like no other as the Vagabond Players present The Revolutionists—a fierce, funny, and fearless comedy set in the heart of revolutionary Paris.
Opening April 24 at the Bernie Legge Theatre, this bold production imagines a dream team of history’s most outspoken women: playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, dethroned queen Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle. Together, they plot, laugh, scream, and scheme their way through 1793, rewriting their own stories—and maybe history itself.
This isn’t your average period drama. The Revolutionists is a smart, fast-paced mix of satire, sisterhood, and surreal moments that swing from absurd to deeply moving. Think sharp wit, big ideas, wild costumes—and a bit of revolutionary chaos.
🎟️ Tickets: $17–$22
📍 Location: Bernie Legge Theatre, Queen’s Park, New Westminster
📅 Dates: April 24 – May 11 (Opening Night: April 24 @ 8:00 PM)
⚠️ Content Warning: Contains mature themes and strong language
Ready to laugh, cry, and maybe start a revolution of your own?
The newly established federal riding of New Westminster-Burnaby-Maillardville is about to step into the national spotlight as the Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) arrives for a special segment highlighting key battlegrounds in the 2025 federal election.
CPAC’s “Campaign Politics” series will be in the area on April 20 and 21, as part of its in-depth election coverage across the country. The team will follow candidates on the campaign trail and connect with local voters to explore the pressing issues shaping this high-profile race.
The riding, long considered a stronghold for the New Democratic Party (NDP), is now seen as more competitive amid shifting political dynamics. With changes in party leadership, growing concerns over affordability, and changing voter sentiment, the NDP’s dominance in the area is being tested according to recent polling.
This marks the first federal election under the newly drawn New Westminster-Burnaby-Maillardville boundaries, which were created through a redistribution process led by the Electoral Boundaries Commission. Over the decades, New Westminster has been grouped with parts of Burnaby and Coquitlam in various configurations.
Historically, the NDP has maintained a strong presence in the region, with figures such as Dawn Black, Fin Donnelly, and Peter Julian representing the area in Ottawa since the late 1980s. However, other parties have also made inroads — notably Paul Forseth, who held office under multiple right-leaning banners from 1993 to 2006.
In the last federal election in 2021, Peter Julian secured a solid win in the now-defunct New Westminster-Burnaby riding. He now seeks to continue his tenure in this new district, running again under the NDP banner.
This year, five candidates are competing to represent the riding in Parliament:
Peter Julian (New Democratic Party)
Indy Panchi (Conservative Party of Canada)
Jake Sawatzky (Liberal Party of Canada)
Tara Shushtarian (Green Party of Canada)
Lourence Almonte Singh (Independent)
