The City of New Westminster’s Crises Response Pilot Project has been awarded $1,466,230 from Health Canada’s Emergency Treatment Fund (ETF). This funding will be distributed over two years to support municipal efforts in tackling the interconnected challenges of homelessness, mental health, and substance use, particularly those linked to the presence of illegal and contaminated drugs.

According to Mayor Patrick Johnstone, the financial support will strengthen the city’s ability to reduce harm, connect people to essential care, and enhance public safety.

Key Objectives of the Project:

  • Establish connections between individuals and a range of support services.

  • Advocate for permanent supportive housing and additional shelter beds with comprehensive support.

  • Improve collaboration through expanded outreach teams and a situation table model for enhanced case management and information sharing.

  • Manage and reduce the presence of discarded drug paraphernalia and other community health hazards.

The Crises Response Pilot Project, launched in September 2024, will serve as a model for municipal-level interventions. The City of New Westminster was one of 65 recipients of ETF funding, standing out among 300 applicants and representing the only successful applicant in British Columbia.
