Concerns over pedestrian safety near École Herbert Spencer Elementary School have intensified following recent vehicle collisions at a busy crosswalk. In response, community members have rallied behind an online petition demanding urgent improvements at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Second Street in New Westminster.

Launched in November by resident Lyndsay Cotterall, the petition quickly gained traction, surpassing 1,600 signatures by late February. Residents have expressed growing fears that students or pedestrians could be harmed if safety measures aren’t put in place.

New Westminster City Council addressed the issue during a budget workshop on Nov. 25, voting to conduct a secondary review of intersection safety. The review, which includes a near-miss analysis, aims to determine necessary pedestrian safety upgrades by 2026.

City officials confirmed that the standard procurement process is underway to hire a road safety consultant for the assessment, with technical work expected to be completed in the spring. Meanwhile, residents continue to share images of vehicle collisions at the intersection, reinforcing the urgency of the issue.
