The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) has introduced its first-ever Community Communications and Engagement Plan, aiming to foster transparent, timely, and accurate communication both internally and externally. As the city continues to grow, the NWPD seeks to strengthen relationships with the community through increased engagement and collaboration.
The plan, guided by the Police Board’s directive for enhanced information sharing and partnerships, aligns with the department’s broader Strategic Plan. It outlines clear goals, benchmarks, and deliverables to ensure consistent progress in building trust and understanding between law enforcement and the public.
An integrated communications approach will connect officers, staff, and the community using a mix of print, electronic, and community engagement methods. This multi-channel strategy ensures messages reach the right audience at the right time.
The plan emphasizes both the “what” and the “how.” On a foundational level, it details the department’s objectives, guiding principles, audience segments, and communication tools. Additionally, it lays out a systematic approach for achieving goals through annual work plans, implementation strategies, and ongoing evaluations.
Community input is a central element of the plan. Residents are encouraged to share their perspectives on the department’s communication efforts, helping to shape future initiatives. Feedback will inform leadership decisions and ensure that the department remains responsive to public needs while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
Looking ahead, the NWPD’s vision extends over the next decade, referred to as the “Next 10.” The plan is designed to adapt to the city’s evolving communication needs while supporting various units, programs, and initiatives. By maintaining flexibility and regularly assessing progress, the department aims to ensure effective communication and meaningful community engagement for years to come.
