🌳 City Encourages Residents to Plant Trees as Part of Urban Forest Strategy

New Westminster is calling on residents to contribute to its goal of reaching 27% canopy coverage by 2030. As part of this initiative, the City plans to plant 3,300 trees on private land and 8,500 on public land over the next several years.

A key component of this effort is the City’s semi-annual tree sale, which allows residents to purchase up to two trees for their property at a reduced cost. Buyers are encouraged to select trees based on their mature height and spread to ensure proper placement and growth. Apartment and condominium dwellers are also invited to participate, with options like the European Strawberry Tree, which thrives in balcony spaces.

Residents should plant trees at least two meters away from City property lines to avoid ownership disputes. Similarly, planting near neighboring private properties should follow the same guidelines. The City reminds residents that tree planting on public land is managed by City staff to accommodate infrastructure, environmental needs, and neighborhood planning.
