New Westminster is under a rainfall warning as a prolonged period of heavy rain and rising freezing levels continues to impact the region. Environment Canada has cautioned that the heaviest rainfall will occur today and tonight, with showers persisting into Monday before tapering off by the evening.
The combination of intense rain and snowmelt from the rising freezing levels β expected to remain significantly elevated into the first half of the week β increases the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas.
By Monday afternoon, rainfall totals in New Westminster and neighboring cities like Burnaby and Vancouver are forecast to reach between 75 to 100 millimeters. Areas closer to the coastal mountains, including the North Shore and Coquitlam, could see as much as 120 millimeters of rainfall. Further east, in regions like Abbotsford, the most intense rainfall is anticipated tonight into Monday morning.
Localized flooding remains a concern, particularly in areas with poor drainage or lower elevation. Drivers are urged to be cautious on slick roads, watch for pooling water, and remain prepared for potential delays.
Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected, and residents are advised to stay updated on the latest alerts and forecasts from Environment Canada.
