A tense situation unfolded in New Westminster on the evening of April 26, when a man entered a restaurant on the 700 block of 12th Street armed with a machete and issued threats to staff. The New Westminster Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call at around 7:00 p.m., arriving to find the suspect had already fled the scene.

According to police, the man had made demands while brandishing the weapon, causing panic among employees. Officers quickly gathered evidence and launched a search, locating and arresting the suspect less than an hour later near the intersection of 8th Street and 8th Avenue.

Authorities are recommending charges including robbery and assault with a weapon. Police have extended thanks to the individual who contacted emergency services, highlighting their role in helping ensure a swift resolution. The restaurant staff affected by the ordeal have been offered support from the department’s Victim Assistance Unit.
