Early yesterday morning, New Westminster police were alerted to a potentially explosive device inside a mailbox after a concerned citizen flagged down an officer around 8:00 a.m. Authorities quickly secured the area, and the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit was called in to assess the situation.

As a precaution, several businesses between Hamilton Street and Eighth Street were evacuated, and 6th Street was temporarily closed to traffic between Eighth Avenue and Sixth Avenue.

After several hours of investigation, experts determined there was no threat to public safety. By midday, the street reopened, and businesses resumed normal operations. Police have now shifted their focus to determining the source of the reported mailbox tampering.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411. Officials also expressed gratitude to residents, businesses, and drivers for their patience, as well as to the citizen who initially reported the suspicious item.
