New Westminster residents will have the opportunity to explore greener living at the upcoming Sustainable Homes Info Sessions on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event takes a comprehensive look at climate action by focusing on climate mitigation, adaptation, and biodiversity, offering attendees both knowledge and inspiration to make meaningful changes in their homes and communities.

This full-day event is designed for all types of residents, from homeowners to apartment dwellers. A series of informative talks from local experts will cover a range of pressing topics, such as how to stay safe during extreme heat events, prepare for atmospheric rivers, and create spaces that support birds and pollinators. Presentations will also explore the benefits of building electrification and how individuals can incorporate climate-conscious upgrades, no matter their housing type.

In addition to the info sessions, the Climate Friendly Homes Tour will provide a unique chance to visit local homes that have embraced sustainable living practices. Attendees will get a firsthand look at technologies and strategies that improve energy efficiency and comfort, such as heat pumps, better insulation, and water conservation systems. Experts, including contractors and energy advisors, will be available at various stops along the tour to answer questions and share practical advice.

To promote low-impact transportation, HUB Cycling will be leading a guided bike tour between select homes, and secure bike storage will be available for attendees. Walking and other forms of active transportation are also encouraged to keep the event as eco-friendly as possible.

With hands-on learning, expert insights, and real-life examples, the event is ideal for anyone looking to make climate-friendly changesโ€”whether you're ready to renovate or simply want to learn more about sustainable options

The City of New Westminster is once again offering residents a simple way to conserve water and save money with the return of its popular rain barrel program. For just $74 plus GST, locals can purchase a rain barrel to collect and reuse rainwater throughout the warmer months โ€” ideal for watering gardens, cleaning patios, or washing cars without tapping into the household water supply.

This city-sponsored initiative not only benefits homeowners but also contributes to broader sustainability goals by reducing stormwater runoff and easing demand on municipal water systems. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a single rain barrel can save up to 1,300 gallons of water annually โ€” helping residents trim their utility bills while protecting the environment.

How to Purchase a Rain Barrel:

  • Cost: $74 + GST

  • Eligibility: Proof of New Westminster residency is required

  • How to Buy: Apply online or in person at City Hall

  • Pickup Location: Engineering Operations Works Yard parking lot, 901 First Street

  • Pickup Time: Between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.

  • Proof of Purchase: Required at pickup

Upcoming Pickup Dates:

  • April: 12, 26

  • May: 10, 24

  • June: 7, 21

  • July: 5, 19

  • August: 9, 23

  • September: 6, 20

Rain barrels are especially useful during summer drought conditions. Because harvested rainwater is exempt from local watering restrictions, residents can keep their gardens green even when tap water use is limited. And since rainwater is free of chlorine and other additives, itโ€™s better for plant health and soil quality.

Beyond the backyard, rain barrels help prevent flooding, reduce soil erosion, and limit the spread of pollutants from stormwater runoff into nearby rivers and streams. The city encourages widespread participation in the program as a small, meaningful step toward protecting New Westminsterโ€™s natural resources and infrastructure.

Most rain barrels hold 40 to 60 gallons and are easy to install. Water flows from roof gutters into the barrel, where it is stored until needed. Barrels include a spigot, an overflow valve, and can be connected to additional barrels for expanded storage.

While rainwater should not be used for drinking, cooking, or any contact with food surfaces, itโ€™s a safe and sustainable option for a wide range of outdoor household uses.

With multiple pickup dates running from April through September, residents have plenty of opportunities to join the program and make the most of every drop.
