What started as a good deed ended in shock for one New Westminster man last Thursday afternoon.
Around 4:30 p.m. on April 10, a driver traveling along the 900 block of Ewen Avenue noticed a man on foot waving his arms, appearing to be in need of help. The driver pulled over and got out to offer assistance โ only to watch, stunned, as the man ran past him, jumped into his vehicle, and drove away.
New Westminster police responded to the manโs 911 call and were able to recover the vehicle not far from the scene, although the suspect had already fled. Officers gathered witness statements and evidence in an effort to track down the person responsible.
The suspect is described as South Asian in appearance, with a beard, wearing a long-sleeve black shirt and a watch.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen the incident or who has information to come forward and reference file number 25-5904. They can contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
Authorities say the incident serves as a cautionary reminder about how quickly scams or opportunistic crimes can occur โ even during moments when people are simply trying to help others.

The stage at Anvil Theatre will soon come alive with the spirit of adventure, music, and courage as students from Moving Mirror Productions take audiences on a journey across the Pacific in Disneyโs Moana Jr.
Running May 23โ24, this musical is a condensed, 60-minute adaptation of Disneyโs hit 2016 film, capturing the heart of the original story in a family-friendly stage version. The show follows the bold and determined Moana as she sets out on a daring mission to save her island and discover her true path, joined by the larger-than-life demigod Maui.
Performed by students in grades 4 through 8, the production is the culmination of months of preparation through Moving Mirror Productionsโ After School Musical Theatre Class. Since September, these young performers have dedicated themselves to learning lines, mastering choreography, and embodying their characters, all while developing their theatrical talents.
Featuring songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaโi, and Mark Mancina, Moana Jr. brings high-energy performances, heartwarming messages, and vibrant storytelling to the stage.
Families and theatre fans alike are invited to support these rising stars during the two-night run. Tickets and event information are available at anviltheatre.ca.
