New Westminster is calling on the provincial government to renew the BC Fairs, Festivals and Events Fund, which has supported 10 local events in the city. The city council unanimously approved a motion from Councillor Ruby Campbell to formally request that Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport Minister Spencer Chandra Herbert extend the fundโ€™s support.

Campbell highlighted concerns raised by local arts organizations and Arts New West, warning that the funding may not continue. She emphasized the fundโ€™s importance to the city's economy and cultural vibrancy, noting that hundreds of arts groups across the province are advocating for its renewal.

The fund has helped sustain events such as the Coastal Dance Festival, New West Pride Festival, RiverFest, and the New West Cultural Crawl. Without continued support, Campbell warned that events like these could be at risk.

The BC Fairs, Festivals, and Events Fund provides financial relief to community event organizers facing rising costs and financial challenges. It covers up to 20% of an eventโ€™s total budget, with a maximum grant of $250,000 per event.

New Westminsterโ€™s push aligns with a province-wide effort to secure continued investment in the arts and cultural sector, ensuring these events remain a key part of the communityโ€™s social and economic landscape.

Starting Today!!

Drivers in New Westminster should prepare for disruptions as the intersection of Front Street and Begbie Street will be closed from March 4 to 13 for paving work.

๐Ÿ”น Impacts:

  • No access to and from Quayside Drive via Begbie Street.

  • Begbie Street remains open, but delays are expected.

  • Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained.

  • Alternative vehicle routes: Use McInnes Street and Third Avenue to access Quayside Drive.

Plan ahead and expect delays in the area! ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšฆ
