 ⛔️ New Westminster Water Main Rupture Floods Streets, Closes Roads

A major water main break in New Westminster has caused significant flooding, road closures, and evacuations. The rupture occurred just before midnight on February 13, when a three-foot diameter pipe burst near 240 Francis Way, affecting Francis Way and Jamieson Court.

Metro Vancouver and City of New Westminster crews responded to the scene, working to manage the floodwaters and assist impacted residents. Emergency Support Services has been coordinating efforts to minimize the disruption for those affected.

Floodwaters reached parkades, vehicles, building lobbies, and elevator shafts, leading to considerable damage. Despite the initial rupture happening late at night, water continued to flow from the broken main for over 11 hours due to the immense pressure within the pipe. Officials likened the process of stopping the flow to slowing down a freight train, requiring a gradual reduction to prevent further complications.

Crews also had to carefully isolate multiple connected valves while ensuring that water service remained operational for Royal Columbian Hospital. Given the size of the pipe and its regional connections, draining the remaining water was a time-consuming process. At the time of the rupture, an estimated 40,000 liters of water per minute was flooding the surrounding streets and properties.

City workers took measures to divert water away from residential buildings, including Royal City Manor. By late morning on February 14, the water flow was under control, though cleanup efforts were expected to take a significant amount of time.

With extensive damage to the affected area, restoration work will be a lengthy process as crews assess the full impact and begin repairs.
