A devastating early morning fire destroyed a house in New Westminster, just weeks after a man had barricaded himself inside the same residence.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 700-block of Queens Avenue at around 2:10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 31. Upon arrival, crews found the house and its garage fully engulfed in flames. Emergency responders quickly confirmed that all occupants had safely exited before focusing on containing the fire.
Given the severity of the blaze, firefighters took a defensive approach rather than entering the unstable structure. A tower ladder was deployed to help control the flames, and additional off-duty personnel were called in to assist. Despite cold and rainy conditions, 28 firefighters battled the fire and had it under control by 6 a.m.
The home was completely destroyed, and investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. Some nearby residents reported hearing an explosion before seeing the flames. Emergency Support Services is assisting at least one person displaced by the incident.
The fire department also worked to protect neighboring properties, including a small apartment building and a single-family home. Despite the intensity of the flames and heavy smoke filling the area, firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading.
Residents noted a strong plastic-like smell during the fire, though officials stated that such odors are common due to the various materials burning inside a home.
