With snow in the forecast, Engineering Operations in New Westminster is responsible for keeping roads and sidewalks clear through the City’s Snow Response Plan. This ensures an efficient and effective approach to deploying resources and maintaining public safety.

Snow Clearing Priorities

✅ Primary Snow Routes (first priority)

  • Major transportation corridors

  • Transit routes

  • Hospital, school, and city facility zones

✅ Secondary Snow Routes (addressed after primary routes are under control)

  • Commercial and residential areas

  • Lanes will only be cleared in cases of medical emergencies or special circumstances

Sidewalk Clearing Responsibilities

Residents and businesses are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks bordering their properties by 10:00 AM the day after snowfall as per Street and Traffic Bylaw No. 7664, 2015.

When clearing sidewalks:
✔ Clear the entire width and length of the sidewalk down to bare concrete for accessibility
✔ Do not shovel snow onto the street
✔ Avoid using rock salt or sodium-based de-icers, as they damage sidewalks—alternative de-icing products are available at local retailers

Residents are encouraged to help clear sidewalks for seniors and those with mobility challenges. A small effort can make a big difference in keeping the community safe.

Additional Snow Tips

✔ Shovel snow as soon as the storm ends
✔ Pile snow to the right side of your driveway (facing the street) to reduce plows pushing it back
✔ Keep fire hydrants clear for emergencies
✔ Move parked cars off major roads to help plows work efficiently
✔ Check in on elderly or mobility-challenged neighbors who may need assistance

Clearing Catch Basins & Preventing Flooding

Residents can help by keeping drainage grates clear of snow and debris to prevent flooding. If a catch basin remains blocked after clearing, call 604-526-4691 for city crews to inspect.

Service Disruptions During Snow Events

❄ Garbage & Recycling: Collection may be delayed or suspended in areas difficult for trucks to access. The city will provide updates as needed.
❄ City Facilities: City Hall, recreation centres, Anvil Centre, and libraries aim to stay open but may adjust hours during extreme snowfall. Contact facilities directly for updates.
