With the Vancouver Canucks eyeing a potential playoff spot in 2025, New Westminster is considering plans to host outdoor viewing events for fans.

At its January 27 meeting, the city council reviewed a motion by Coun. Paul Minhas, proposing that staff begin preparations for public watch parties if the Canucks make the postseason. The motion suggested partnerships with the Downtown Business Improvement Area and the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, with staff reporting back on costs and revenue opportunities by March 31.

Minhas highlighted hockey's cultural significance in Canada, emphasizing how shared viewing experiences could boost community spirit and local businesses. He suggested venues such as the Anvil Centre or community centers, noting that outdoor events could foster a lively, inclusive atmosphere for families and fans alike.

However, instead of approving the motion outright, the council unanimously amended it to include consultations with local business groups, police, and tourism officials before committing to the initiative. Some business owners had previously expressed concerns that city-sponsored events could divert customers from restaurants and bars that rely on playoff-season traffic.

Coun. Tasha Henderson, chair of the police board, also raised security considerations, recalling past incidents of public disorder during major hockey events in Vancouver. She stressed the need for careful planning to assess police resources and minimize potential risks.

With the amended motion in place, city staff will gather input from key stakeholders before the council decides on hosting official viewing events.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) is cautioning residents to be on high alert for online dating scams. Fraudsters posing as romantic partners often build trust before exploiting their victims for financial gain.

Authorities warn that scammers typically follow a pattern: they express love quickly, have vague or overly polished profiles, push to move conversations off dating platforms, and eventually ask for money. Police urge residents to be skeptical of anyone they haven’t met in person who requests financial assistance.

The NWPD advises never to send money or share sensitive personal details with online acquaintances. Those who suspect they may be targeted should report fraud immediately by calling 604-525-5411. Additional information on romance scams is available through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
