The Amelia Douglas Gallery invites the public to the opening reception of a thought-provoking exhibition on January 16, 2025, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. This material-based exhibition delves into the societal effects of vicarious traumatization caused by sexualized violence. The showcase highlights the experiences of “Witnesses”—individuals such as crisis support workers, healthcare professionals, educators, family members, and peers who are indirectly impacted by survivors’ trauma.
Thirteen talented artists have collaborated with these witnesses, transforming their experiences into powerful material-based artworks. The exhibition aims to spark dialogue and foster a greater understanding of the far-reaching impacts of such trauma within society.
Operated by members of the Douglas College community, the Amelia Douglas Gallery is a non-profit organization dedicated to featuring emerging and established British Columbian artists. Through its art exhibitions and programs, the gallery enhances the educational experience at the college.
Named after Lady Amelia Douglas, the gallery honors the legacy of a Cree woman celebrated for her courage, compassion, and skill as a nurse and midwife. Her life story reflects resilience and service, values echoed in the gallery's mission.
Artists interested in future exhibitions can learn more through the gallery’s submission guidelines. Visitors are encouraged to explore the gallery’s offerings for information on current and upcoming exhibits.
