βοΈ Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Forecast for Metro Vancouver Over the Holidays and Ferry Cancellations
A weather alert has been issued for Metro Vancouver, Squamish, and surrounding areas as a pair of weather systems are expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds from midday on Christmas Day through Boxing Day. The forecast warns of potential hazards, including water pooling on roads, travel disruptions, and possible power outages.
When: December 25 (midday) to December 26 (afternoon)
Where: Metro Vancouver, New Westminster, Squamish, North Shore, northern Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge
Hazards:
Localized flooding in low-lying areas
Water pooling on roads
Slippery conditions in higher terrain above 300 metres
Potential travel disruptions and power outages
Rainfall Amounts:
General areas: 50-80 mm
North Shore, northern Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge: 100 mm or more
On Christmas Day, heavy rainfall will begin and may briefly transition to wet snow over higher terrain, causing slippery conditions. Rain will persist through Boxing Day as a second weather system passes through, easing into scattered showers by late afternoon.
Travel and Safety Advisory:
Heavy downpours could lead to flash floods and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Drivers should exercise caution, watch for pooling water, and prepare for potential travel delays. BC Ferries has also warned of possible service disruptions on December 25 due to high winds in the Strait of Georgia and North Vancouver Island. Customers will be automatically refunded for weather-related cancellations.

To ensure the safety of our customers and crew, all sailings between Tsawwassen (Vancouver) and Duke Point (Nanaimo) must be cancelled for tomorrow, Wednesday, December 25, as a result of Environment Canadaβs severe weather forecast for high winds and waves in the Strait of Georgia and North Vancouver Island.

Cassius Khan, one of Canadaβs most distinguished Indian Classical musicians, is known for his extraordinary ability to simultaneously sing Ghazal and Thumri while playing the Tabla. A master of the rare and intricate Tarannum Ang Gayaki style, Khan brings centuries-old musical traditions to life with his innovative and powerful performances.
Joining him is Angelique Muhorakeye, a skilled Rwandan dancer and choreographer, who has honed her expertise across various styles, including Rwandan traditional, hip-hop, and Afro-fusion. Her vibrant performances reflect a passion for movement and expression, nurtured through teaching and community engagement.
Edward Sembatya, a versatile Ugandan dance artist, choreographer, and drummer, rounds out the afternoon with his deep knowledge of East African indigenous dances and music. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in dance at Simon Fraser University, Sembatya draws on contemporary life and traditional Ugandan narratives to create dynamic, thought-provoking performances.
Admission to this event is by Pay-What-You-Can, ensuring accessibility for all. Contributions can be made at the door, and cash, credit, and debit are accepted. The performance offers a chance to celebrate global traditions, connect with diverse cultures, and enjoy an unforgettable afternoon of artistic expression.
