New Westminster’s film industry is back on track, recovering from challenges posed by the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes, as well as pandemic-era restrictions. The resurgence highlights the industry’s significant economic impact on the city, contributing millions annually through filming-related activities.

Across British Columbia, the film industry generates $3 billion each year, with New Westminster benefiting substantially. In 2017, the city’s Film Office issued 135 film permits, generating over $1 million in revenues to support local services and community programs. This filming activity translated to an economic spin-off of $1.3–$2.6 million from local spending on goods, services, and locations.

For merchants and residents, just one day of filming can inject $10,000–$20,000 into the local economy. Additionally, New West residents employed in the film industry earned over $47 million in 2017, with much of that income reinvested into the city through local purchases, further strengthening the economy.

Filming also boosts tourism, with fans of popular shows like Once Upon A Time, Supergirl, Riverdale, and Supernatural visiting New Westminster to explore filming locations. This “film tourism” drives even more spending in the community, from restaurants and shops to accommodations and tours.

Altogether, New Westminster’s film industry generates an estimated $50 million annually, making it a powerful economic force that supports jobs, local businesses, and community vibrancy. Have you experienced filming right in your neighbourhood?

🌊  Brace for Impact: B.C. Bomb Cyclone Intensifies, Bringing Major Disruptions

B.C.’s South Coast is feeling the effects of an exceptional bomb cyclone, a rapidly intensifying storm system that began impacting the region late Tuesday. While the storm remains offshore, its powerful winds and heavy precipitation are causing significant disruptions inland, with impacts expected to continue into Wednesday.

What Is a Bomb Cyclone?

A bomb cyclone occurs when a storm undergoes bombogenesis—rapid intensification defined by a drop of at least 24 millibars in atmospheric pressure within 24 hours. This storm has far exceeded that threshold, with a 60–70 hPA pressure drop in just one day.

Winds, Power Outages, and Travel Disruptions

Gusts of 90–100 km/h are expected, particularly on the east side of Vancouver Island and through the Strait of Georgia. These winds have already caused power outages and disrupted travel. BC Ferries canceled Tuesday evening sailings between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, and further delays and cancellations are anticipated today. New Westies are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and plan travel cautiously as the strong winds will continue through the day.

New Westies Who Ski - Heavy Precipitation and Snowfall

Some alpine regions are forecasted to receive over 100 cm of snow by the end of Wednesday, creating hazardous conditions. The heavy snowfall has prompted early openings for some ski resorts, like Big White, but also raises concerns about accessibility in affected areas.

Additional Impacts

The combination of southeast winds and early outflow winds from the mainland has pushed gusts farther onshore than usual. This unusual weather setup for the season underscores the cyclone’s intensity.

Stay Prepared

With widespread wind warnings, special weather statements, and advisories in effect, residents should stay informed and exercise caution. The storm’s impacts are expected to persist through Wednesday, affecting power, travel, and daily routines.
