 🌉 Footbridge Repairs Near Hyak Square Face Delays, Councillor Provides Update

Many thanks to subscriber Angela Gallacher Monaghan for the following question! During today’s Diwali celebration in Queensborough, City Councillor Ruby Campbell responded to my question regarding community concerns about the delayed repairs on the footbridge between Hyak Square and the River Market. The footbridge, built in the 1980s, is owned by an international company rather than the City of New Westminster. As workers dig into the structure, they continue to uncover additional issues, making the project more complex than initially expected.

Campbell explained that as more structural problems have emerged, specialized equipment has been needed, some of which had to be specially ordered, leading to further delays. She assured residents that she would gather more information and would keep the community updated.

The footbridge closure has impacted many New West residents who rely on it for convenient access between Hyak Square and the River Market. Councillor Campbell’s remarks highlight the city’s commitment to progress on the repairs, despite not having direct ownership over the bridge.

Organized by Haze Realty and Kofsky Mortgage, the Coffee Crawl lets participants collect stamps at each participating café by purchasing a beverage or snack. As you fill in your card, you’ll earn entries into the prize draw—one line equals one entry, two lines earn three entries, and so on, with a fully stamped card counting as ten entries.

Completed cards can be dropped off at any participating café, and the winners will be announced on the DRINK NEW WEST Facebook Page and NOT BAD, NEW WEST Instagram by January 15, 2025. Each winner will receive a $20 gift certificate to three cafés featured on the card.
