♻️ Refill Stop Celebrates 5 Years of Reducing Waste in New Westminster
A small business in downtown New Westminster is marking a major milestone in sustainability. Jessica Brown, founder of the Refill Stop, has been helping reduce waste in the community for five years by encouraging customers to bring reusable containers to refill with household essentials. Since opening on Carnarvon Street in 2019, the shop has prevented over 80,000 plastic bottles from entering landfills or recycling facilities, significantly reducing waste and saving on resources.
Brown started the Refill Stop inspired by other refill stores she had visited, hoping to provide New Westminster residents with an accessible, eco-friendly shopping option. The store stocks a range of refillable products, from dish soap to personal care items, with unscented, scented, and even all-natural options. Customers can bring in their own containers or buy new ones in-store. The store’s best seller is dish soap, but Brown notes that they also carry harder-to-find items like all-natural cleaning solutions and locally sourced gift items.
In addition to refillable products, the Refill Stop also offers vinyl records, a popular addition that has supported the store through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic and nearby construction. Brown credits her husband, Ken Wylie, with the idea, which has attracted a new customer base that often returns for refills.
The business will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a storewide sale over the weekend, offering a 15% discount on most products. Brown acknowledges that the refill market has faced setbacks, with other refill shops in the area closing, but she remains optimistic, attributing the Refill Stop’s success to its adaptability and strong customer base.
The Refill Stop, located at 865 Carnarvon Street, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m...
🎃 First-Ever Pumpkin Drop Draws Families for a Smashing Good Time 🎃

New Westminster Firefighters Pumpkin Drop 2024
The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society’s first-ever Pumpkin Drop event brought out a lively crowd eager to send their Halloween pumpkins off with a bang. Held on November 2 at the city’s #1 fire hall, the event turned out to be a smashing success, drawing families, kids, and pumpkin enthusiasts from across the community. Attendees gathered in the crisp fall weather to watch as firefighters hoisted pumpkins 100 feet up in the air before letting them freefall, with each impact sending pieces flying and leaving the ground shaking.
The day was packed with family-friendly activities, including face painting for kids by MJC Artistry, which drew long lines and bright smiles. Tasty treats like hot chocolate and tea warmed up the crowd, adding to the festive atmosphere. Kids, especially, loved the event, many were reluctant to leave after watching pumpkin after pumpkin smash to pieces on the tarmac. A smart group of young girls were standing in the safety zone, but still got a tiny bit of pumpkin on them!
Undoubtedly the New Westminster Firefighter Charitable Society was thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm, the event was a unique way to bring the community together for a good cause. Easy parking at the nearby təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, dropped off their pumpkins and watched firefighters manage the massive drops from Tower 1. The last count heard was 177 pumpkins dropped.
With its success, many attendees expressed hopes that the Pumpkin Drop will return as an annual tradition. The event not only provided an unforgettable spectacle but also strengthened community ties, all while raising funds for the charitable society’s ongoing work.
