🧑‍💼 Mayor Johnstone Shifts Focus Back to Local Initiatives, Leaving Metro Vancouver Board

Metro Vancouver Logo

Mayor Patrick Johnstone of New Westminster has decided not to continue as the city’s representative on the Metro Vancouver board, aiming to refocus on local projects. The council will appoint a new member on November 4. Johnstone explained his decision, noting that Metro Vancouver responsibilities have become too time-consuming. He will remain involved in regional matters through the Mayor’s Committee and TransLink Mayors Council. The change coincides with Metro Vancouver’s new chair, Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley, considering committee adjustments. This move opens an opportunity for New Westminster’s council to bring new representation to the board..

Dubai

New Westminster Mayor Patrick Johnstone will receive ethics training after an investigation into his C40-funded trip to COP28 in Dubai revealed an "inadvertent" breach of the city’s gift acceptance policy. Opposition councillors filed the complaint, arguing the trip contravened the provincial Community Charter. Ethics Commissioner Jennifer Devins concluded Johnstone’s actions stemmed from a good-faith oversight rather than intentional misconduct, recommending training on gift-related regulations for all council members. Johnstone has accepted the findings and supports the ethics training for himself and other councillors to strengthen governance understanding.
