🎃 Watch Pumpkins Soar 100 Feet at New Westminster’s First-Ever Pumpkin Drop

A Smashing Good Time!

The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society is inviting community members to bring their post-Halloween pumpkins for a "smashing good time" at their first-ever Pumpkin Drop fundraiser, happening Saturday, November 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Hall #1, located at 1 East Sixth Avenue.

Participants can park at the nearby təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, then head to the fire hall, where they can drop off their pumpkins with the firefighters. From there, the pumpkins will be raised 100 feet in the air on the ladder of the fire hall’s tower truck, and released to smash on the tarmac below, creating a fun spectacle for all ages.

The event promises family-friendly entertainment, including face painting and warm drinks like hot chocolate and tea. Organizers hope for good weather and an enthusiastic turnout for this inaugural event, which puts a local twist on similar pumpkin drops held in other nearby communities. The idea is to create a memorable experience while raising funds to support community causes.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society, which supports local charities through events like their annual Christmas tree chipping and shred-a-thon. Following the pumpkin splatter, a sanitation truck will be on-site to collect and compost the remains, keeping the event both exciting and environmentally responsible.

Congratulations!

New Westminster, B.C. — Queensborough Middle School teacher-librarian Lisa Seddon has been recognized as "Librarian of the Year" by the BC Teacher-Librarians' Association (BCTLA) for her exceptional contributions to the field. Seddon received the prestigious Diana Poole Memorial Award at a ceremony in Victoria on October 25, marking a significant honor in her teaching career.

Seddon’s nomination came from her colleague Sarah Wethered, a fellow teacher-librarian at New Westminster Secondary School (NWSS), who highlighted Seddon’s influence on both students and the broader school community. According to Wethered, Seddon's work has elevated the teaching environment and set a positive example for educational staff across the district.

In her seven years at Queensborough Middle School, Seddon has undertaken a number of innovative projects, including an initiative to "decolonize" the library’s non-fiction catalogue. Starting in mid-2023, Seddon led an effort to replace the Dewey Decimal System with the Brian Deer Classification, a system developed specifically to reflect Indigenous perspectives and knowledge organization. This re-cataloguing project was completed in June, and Seddon notes it brings a meaningful shift to how Indigenous content is prioritized in library spaces.

Beyond her work in the library, Seddon serves as the vice-president of the BCTLA and has held a role in its executive team for the past six years. The Diana Poole Memorial Award is the highest accolade offered by the BCTLA, celebrating teacher-librarians who demonstrate excellence in library program development, inspire colleagues, and contribute significantly to professional growth within British Columbia.

⛈️ Rain Joke of the Day 🌧️

I read that by law you must turn on your headlights when it’s raining in Sweden.

Answer: But how am I supposed to know when it’s raining in Sweden?
