New Westminster's city council has emphasized the importance of including a school in the Columbia Square redevelopment, a large-scale project proposing 3,800 residential units to accommodate approximately 7,250 new residents. The council passed the first three readings of a zoning amendment bylaw for the Columbia Square site, moving forward with a plan that now requires the developer, EDGAR Development, to work with the school district to explore options for a new urban-format public school on the premises.
In a recent council meeting, staff confirmed that the project could bring around 530 school-aged children into the area. Given this anticipated increase, the council has stressed that EDGAR Development should collaborate closely with the New Westminster school district to secure property that could support educational needs. Additionally, the school district will have the option to lease or purchase property from the developer for potential school facilities.
Councilor Tasha Henderson voiced her strong support for securing a school site, urging city staff to coordinate with both the school district and the developer to ensure this priority is met. Henderson noted she would not support final approval if the developer is not engaging in meaningful discussions about the school. Mayor Patrick Johnstone echoed this sentiment, stating the council expects robust involvement from all parties, including the school board and the provincial government, which oversees school funding.

Beware!
Halloween trick-or-treaters across New Westminster can expect decent weather on October 31, with mostly dry conditions in the early evening hours, but a rainy shift later on may catch party-goers on their way home. According to Environment Canada, while late October has been damp across the Metro Vancouver area, Halloween itself will bring only mild, scattered showers during the day, with evening weather expected to clear up for a largely dry window.
On Halloween day, the temperature will hover around 10Β°C, with an overnight low near 7Β°C. While there could be light, insignificant showers during the day, trick-or-treaters should find favorable weather between 5 and 7 p.m., with a mix of sun and cloud and only a slight chance of rain. Light jackets should be enough for those setting out early.
However, by late Halloween night, a weather system from the Gulf of Alaska will bring heavier rain, beginning around 9 p.m. and continuing through much of Friday. Most of the region will likely see between 20 and 40 mm. As the system moves through, temperatures will stay steady at around 10Β°C into the weekend.
