π Overcrowding Pushes New Westminster Secondary to Staggered Schedule
New Westminster Secondary School, the cityβs sole high school, will extend its school day next year as it moves to a staggered schedule in response to increasing enrolment and significant overcrowding. The new schedule, set to begin in the fall, will shift to a five-block system that extends hours and spaces classes out over the day. School board officials believe this change will help distribute students more evenly throughout the building, easing congestion in hallways and shared spaces.
The decision comes amid rapid population growth in New Westminster, which has placed mounting pressure on school resources. With no available space to add portables, the school board is exploring alternative solutions to meet the demands of a growing student body. However, many parents have voiced concerns, and some have openly opposed the extended school day, citing impacts on after-school activities, family schedules, and student well-being. Despite the opposition, the board voted to move forward with the plan, aiming to address the pressing space limitations without expanding the physical footprint of the school.
As the population continues to grow, school officials anticipate further challenges and emphasize that they will continue to monitor enrolment numbers and consider additional strategies to manage overcrowding.

βοΈ Public Urged to Provide Footage in New Westminster Incident Involving Two Girls

Do you have dashcam footage?
The New Westminster Police Department is reaching out to the community for assistance in gathering CCTV or dashcam footage related to a suspicious interaction involving two young girls on October 26th. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. in the 200 block of 11th Street, when a male driver in a white cargo van reportedly approached two 12-year-old girls and asked if they wanted to go for a ride. The girls quickly left the area and informed a trusted adult.
Authorities have limited details about the driver, who is currently only described as male. Police are now working to obtain additional information on his appearance and are asking anyone who may have footage of the area between 10:50 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. to review it and contact the department if anything relevant is found.
Sergeant Andrew Leaver emphasized the importance of parents discussing with children the potential dangers of engaging with strangers, reminding families to take extra precautions. Anyone with potential video evidence is encouraged to download it and call the New Westminster Police Department, referencing file number 24-17900.
