Starlight Casino

Three people were injured in a stabbing incident at the Starlight Casino in New Westminster, B.C., early Saturday morning. Police responded to a 911 call at around 12:29 a.m., finding that an altercation between two groups on the casino restaurant’s patio had escalated to a fight involving knives. The injured individuals suffered serious but non-life-threatening lacerations and were treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.

One suspect was apprehended at the scene with the assistance of witnesses, while New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) investigators continue their efforts to identify and locate additional suspects. Officers spent several hours collecting evidence in the area, and NWPD has assured the public that the event appears to be an isolated incident.

NWPD has requested assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant cell phone footage from the casino between midnight and 1 a.m. Residents who noticed police and emergency vehicles crossing the Queensborough Bridge took to social media, sharing accounts of the increased law enforcement activity.

Leaf it to the City

This fall, the City has launched the "Leaf it to the City!" program, offering a convenient four-week period for extra yard trimmings pickup to help residents manage the seasonal influx of fallen leaves and garden waste. From October 21 to November 15, 2024, residents with curbside collection service can place additional kraft paper bags of leaves, yard trimmings, and branch bundles at the curb, surpassing the usual two-bag limit, on their regular collection days.

An extra truck will circulate to manage the surplus, which means these extra pickups may not align with the regular green waste cart schedule. Residents are advised to wait until the day after their scheduled collection to report any missed pickups.

Guidelines for Collection:

  • Branch Bundling and Bagging: Branches should be tied with twine, and kraft bags packed with leaves and trimmings should weigh less than 50 pounds each.

  • Placement Requirements: Ensure all additional bags and bundles are positioned at least one meter away from regular collection carts to prevent interference with the trucks’ mechanical arms.

  • Branch Size: Branches must not exceed three feet in length and three inches in diameter.

  • Rain Preparation: Cover bags on rainy days to prevent them from disintegrating.

Restrictions:

Certain items are prohibited, including stumps, rocks, soil, and food scraps, as well as plastic bags of any kind.

This expanded program aims to assist residents in keeping their yards clean and safe throughout the fall season by easing the curbside collection process for high-demand green waste collection during peak leaf fall.
