The City of New Westminster is continuing to fine-tune the newly opened təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, a $114.6-million facility that celebrated its grand opening on June 1. While many residents are enjoying the amenities, ongoing warranty work is addressing minor issues that have surfaced since the opening.
City staff, along with contractors, are working to resolve a range of deficiencies, all of which are covered under warranty. Some visitors have noted temporary "out of order" signs around the facility, which have been attributed to hardware failures common in new buildings. Corrinne Garrett, senior manager of recreation services and facilities, explained that staff are collaborating with subcontractors to identify and replace faulty hardware when necessary, although supply chain delays have affected some repairs.
One issue involved sediment buildup in five storage tanks, which was clogging shower nozzles in the aquatic centre. The tanks have since been flushed, and a filter screen has been installed to prevent further blockages. Other improvements include replacing unsuitable change room signage and developing custom-made accessible ladders for the deep section of the 50-metre pool.
The təməsew̓txʷ facility recently earned Gold certification from the Rick Hansen Foundation, achieving an 87% accessibility rating. Additionally, it has been recognized by the Prix Versailles committee as one of the world’s most beautiful sports venues for 2024, a prestigious honor that could lead to further accolades.
The centre's outdoor spaces are also receiving attention. Landscaping work, delayed during the hot summer months, is now underway with replanting scheduled for fall. Enhancements to bike lanes, sidewalks, and traffic signals will improve accessibility and safety for all users. A secure bike shelter is planned for installation in 2025.
Inside, a temporary food truck is serving visitors while plans for a permanent café space are in development. The city aims to begin planning for the café later this fall, with the goal of opening by late spring or summer 2025.
