Small businesses in British Columbia are grappling with multiple challenges, including rising leases, increasing operational costs, and concerns over petty crime. These pressures are raising concerns about the ability of small businesses to survive and thrive.

Two candidates in New Westminster-Coquitlam responded to The Record’s questions about how they plan to support small businesses:

  • Maureen Curran of the BC Green Party acknowledged the strain on local businesses, especially those forced out due to rising rents and other costs. She proposed measures to protect small business owners from excessive rent hikes, similar to tenant protection for housing. She also emphasized the importance of investing in public transit to ensure that businesses have access to a reliable workforce and customers with spending power, as well as revitalizing vacant, deteriorating properties to attract new businesses.

  • Jennifer Whiteside of the BC NDP highlighted her party’s ongoing efforts to cut costs for small businesses. She pointed to the reduction in the small business tax rate and initiatives to provide property tax relief. Whiteside also mentioned measures like cutting the Employer Health Tax for 90% of businesses, providing relief for property crime costs, and helping with electricity savings through the BC Electricity Affordability Credit. She stressed that improving skills training, housing availability, and affordable childcare are key to supporting businesses in finding the workers they need.

These responses reflect differing approaches to addressing the challenges facing small businesses, with Curran focusing on rent controls and community investment, while Whiteside highlights tax cuts and workforce support measures.
