⚡️ Aging Meters to Be Replaced as New Westminster Rolls Out Advanced Metering

The City of New Westminster is set to upgrade its aging electrical metering equipment with a more advanced system known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). This change is necessary as the current equipment is becoming obsolete and increasingly expensive to maintain. The new AMI system will enhance the city’s ability to support a modern electrical grid and integrate sustainable technologies as part of its broader climate emergency initiatives.

The AMI upgrade project has been awarded to two contractors: KTI Utility Services will handle the supply and installation of the new meters, while Harris Computer Systems will manage the IT infrastructure for the system. Installation is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2024, with completion expected in 2025.

Residents and property owners will receive specific details about when their meters will be replaced in advance of installation. The new system is designed to meet the needs of the city’s growing population and improve efficiency in managing the electrical grid.

New Westminster received a C+ from Goodman Commercial for its implementation of transit-oriented development areas (TOAs), one of the highest ratings given. While the city has adopted a bylaw and framework to support growth near SkyTrain stations, development beyond high-density areas is limited to rental units. Vancouver led with a B, while Burnaby received an F for making no progress.
