With a career spanning over seven decades, Judy Collins remains one of the most influential and celebrated figures in modern music. From her early days as a folk singer interpreting traditional melodies to introducing audiences to the works of Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and Randy Newman, Collins has continually redefined herself as a groundbreaking artist.

A Grammy Award-winning musician, an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker, and a tireless social activist, Collins has earned her place as a true Renaissance woman. She has released 55 albums, leaving an indelible mark on folk, pop, rock, and show tunes. Her soaring voice, eclectic musical tastes, and unwavering commitment to activism have made her an enduring icon.

Milestones in a Storied Career

Collins’ 1961 debut album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, featured traditional folk songs, but it was her 1967 recording of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides, Now that catapulted her to international fame, earning her a Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance. Over the years, her recordings of Someday Soon, Chelsea Morning, Amazing Grace, Turn! Turn! Turn!, and Cook with Honey have become classics.

Her 1975 album Judith delivered the career-defining hit Send in the Clowns, written by Stephen Sondheim. The song spent 27 weeks on the charts across two releases and earned Collins a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance. The Judith album itself achieved both Gold and Platinum certification, solidifying her as a household name.

In 2017, her rendition of Amazing Grace was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural and historical significance. Even at 80, Collins showed no signs of slowing down; her 2019 album Winter Stories became her first No. 1 on a U.S. Billboard chart. Most recently, in 2022, she released Spellbound, her first album of entirely original material, earning her another Grammy nomination.
