⛴️ Community Rallies to Save Q to Q Ferry as City Reviews 2025 Budget
Hundreds of residents are rallying to keep New Westminster’s Q to Q ferry service afloat, but city officials assure the community that there are no plans to discontinue the service. A petition launched on Sept. 12 by a Queensborough resident garnered over 300 signatures within 24 hours, calling for the ferry’s continued operation through 2024 and beyond. The petition emphasized the importance of the ferry, which connects Queensborough and downtown New Westminster, to local residents and businesses. It highlighted the service’s role in facilitating access to work, school, and leisure activities, especially for families and retirees.
The city initially announced that due to rising costs, the ferry would cease operations after Dec. 15, 2024, but service was expected to resume in January 2025. However, in an update, the city clarified that the ferry would continue through the end of December and beyond, with no service on Dec. 25 and 26. City staff are currently reviewing ferry costs and will present a proposed budget for 2025. Despite rumors, officials confirmed that the service will not be discontinued, and its future operations will depend on budget approvals.
The Q to Q ferry service was first introduced as a pilot project in 2017 to connect the waterfront neighborhoods of Queensborough and Quayside after plans for a pedestrian bridge were abandoned due to regulatory and cost barriers.
Today I rode the ferry and met the mascot Navy! I also met a fellow dog owner, Wendy. Her dog is Finn! It was a wonderful little trip with a friendly crew and passengers.

The restoration of the riverfront connection between Westminster Pier Park and River Market is expected by late 2024 or early 2025. The expansion of the park, part of the Pier West development, is progressing, with $0.7 million allocated for design and planning in 2024 and construction to begin in 2025. The reopening of the waterfront boardwalk has been delayed due to ongoing construction, with a new timeline set for next winter.
