 🛢️ Sue Big Oil: New Westminster Considers Joining Class Action Over Environmental Damage

New Westminster is considering joining a class action lawsuit against major oil companies as part of the "Sue Big Oil" campaign, led by the West Coast Environmental Law Foundation. The lawsuit seeks to recover costs related to climate change impacts such as wildfires and floods. If the motion passes, New Westminster would contribute $79,000 to a legal fund to sue fossil fuel giants for their role in worsening climate change. Several other BC municipalities have joined the initiative, modeled after similar legal efforts worldwide.

 🪶 Two Ways to Commemorate Truth and Reconciliation in New Westminster

New Westminster will offer two main ways to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2024. The Spirit of the Children Society will host a public event featuring cultural performances and reflections, while educational resources will be available to deepen community engagement. The day is dedicated to recognizing the impacts of residential schools on Indigenous communities and fostering healing and learning.
