Oxford Dictionaries has crowned "brain rot" as the 2024 Word of the Year, a term that has surged in popularity and reflects modern concerns about the digital age. According to Oxford University Press, the phrase experienced a 230% increase in usage over the past year, earning its place as a cultural touchstone.
Defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially due to overconsumption of trivial or unchallenging material,” the term highlights the growing conversation around the impact of online content. It was selected through a mix of public voting and linguistic analysis, outperforming finalists like "demure," "slop," "dynamic pricing," "romantasy," and "lore."
Interestingly, the phrase has historical roots, first recorded by Henry David Thoreau in his 1854 classic Walden. However, its modern interpretation has gained momentum as concerns about the effects of virtual life dominate discussions. Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl noted that the term encapsulates societal apprehensions about technology’s influence on how we spend our leisure time.
This recognition follows last year’s Oxford word, “rizz,” a slang term for charisma. Meanwhile, Collins Dictionary's 2024 Word of the Year, “brat,” reflects a carefree, summer-inspired cultural ideal.
