The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) has reported a recent surge in the use of Naloxone to revive individuals experiencing opioid overdoses. Over the past week, officers successfully administered the life-saving medication to four people, all found in the Downtown neighbourhood. Two of these incidents occurred during proactive foot patrols by police.

Sergeant Andrew Leaver highlighted the critical role of Naloxone in these situations, expressing gratitude for its availability to officers and the successful outcomes. The NWPD collaborates closely with BC Emergency Health Services to ensure that individuals in medical distress receive timely care during overdose incidents.

Naloxone, adopted by the NWPD in February 2017, is a nasal spray that quickly reverses the effects of opioids, restoring normal breathing in overdose victims. It is designed to block and reverse the impact of opioids such as fentanyl, heroin, and oxycodone. However, the drug is not a treatment for opioid addiction and has no effect on individuals without opioids in their system.

The NWPD continues to encourage harm reduction practices for individuals who use drugs and directs the public to the Fraser Health website for further information on safe strategies to reduce overdose risks.

On December 7, the Saltwater Hank Trio will deliver an electrifying performance that celebrates the rich traditions of Ts’msyen culture while infusing them with modern musical energy. Led by Saltwater Hank, a Ts’msyen musician from Txałgiiw (Hartley Bay) now based in Lax Kxeen (Prince Rupert), the trio offers a dynamic blend of rock ‘n’ roll, intricate rhythms, and melodies rooted in ancestral heritage.

Saltwater Hank is deeply committed to preserving and revitalizing the oral traditions and language of his people. His songs, written entirely in Sm’algya̱x, are a powerful expression of his cultural identity. Through his music, he bridges generations, allowing younger audiences to experience the vibrancy of ancient stories and forgotten narratives while reshaping them for contemporary listeners.

Described as “a spoonful of oolichan grease,” Saltwater Hank’s music is the perfect mix of soulful medicine and rhythmic vibrancy. Together with his trio, he delivers an unforgettable performance that not only entertains but also strengthens cultural connections and inspires a new generation of storytellers.

Don't miss this unique and spirited evening of music, culture, and storytelling. The Saltwater Hank Trio promises a memorable celebration of tradition and modernity that resonates across generations.
