 🐕️ Holiday Giving: Help Make a Shelter Pet’s Christmas Special

This holiday season, New Westminster Animal Services is sharing the Christmas wishlist of shelter animals, inviting the community to make a difference in their lives. Donations are welcome at their shelter, located at 420 Boyne Street, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., seven days a week. Additionally, Bosley’s by Pet Valu in Columbia Square has partnered with the shelter to collect contributions on their behalf.

For those who prefer a personalized touch, Christmas Tree gift tags featuring specific shelter residents and their wishlist items will be available soon. Every donation helps provide comfort and care to the stray, abandoned, and unwanted animals currently under the shelter’s care.

New Westminster Animal Services emphasizes the importance of thoughtful consideration before adopting a pet. Adoption is a long-term commitment, potentially lasting up to 15 years. Prospective adopters are encouraged to evaluate their financial situation, lifestyle, and housing before deciding to bring an animal into their lives.

Once ready, future pet owners are urged to research and identify the type of pet that fits their needs and lifestyle. Each animal at the shelter has a unique personality and specific requirements, and the organization strives to match pets with their ideal homes for lasting companionship.

 📦️ NWPD Deploys High-Tech Bait Packages to Combat Holiday Parcel Theft

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) is ramping up its efforts to tackle parcel theft this holiday season with the use of high-tech bait packages. Launched in December 2022, this program equips decoy packages with tracking technology, allowing officers to monitor and apprehend thieves. The packages are placed on doorsteps and in mailboxes at predetermined locations with homeowners’ consent.

Sergeant Andrew Leaver emphasized the importance of protecting families from the frustration of stolen deliveries during the festive season. He warned potential thieves to think twice, noting that the police are actively deploying bait packages across the city.

To further deter theft, the NWPD encourages residents to take precautionary measures such as coordinating with neighbors to monitor deliveries, having packages sent to secure locations like workplaces or pickup lockers, retrieving parcels promptly, and considering shipping insurance for high-value items.

The bait package program is not limited to the holidays and remains a year-round initiative to discourage package theft in the community. Residents interested in participating by hosting a bait package in their neighborhood are invited to contact the police department via email at [email protected]. Posters promoting the program are also available in the NWPD’s lobby.
