Construction of a new 52-unit supportive housing project is set to begin in downtown New Westminster, with the development expected to open within 14 to 18 months. Located at 602 Agnes Street, previously known as 68 Sixth Street, the six-story building will offer deeply affordable studio apartments alongside vital support services for individuals at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness.

Site preparation work has begun. The project, a partnership between BC Housing and the City of New Westminster, highlights the city's commitment to addressing homelessness and supporting vulnerable populations.

โ€œThis housing will provide deeply affordable units and essential on-site support services that are greatly needed by unhoused residents of New Westminster,โ€ said Jackie Teed, the cityโ€™s director of planning and development. Teed noted that while modular construction was initially considered, the project will instead use traditional development methods to deliver a high-quality, long-lasting structure.

The building will feature 52 studio units, a dining area, and a rooftop outdoor space, creating a comfortable and community-focused environment for residents. The City of New Westminster granted a special development permit for the project in June 2024, and the final building permit is now nearing approval.

Lookout Housing and Health Society, a well-established non-profit with over 50 years of experience providing shelter and support services, has been selected to operate the facility. The organization will manage the site and provide 24/7 support to residents, offering a range of services such as meal programs, life skills training, and access to community resources.

John Stark, the cityโ€™s manager of community planning, stated that the project is expected to be ready for occupancy in 14 to 18 months. Once operational, the supportive housing will serve single adults aged 19 and older, including seniors and individuals with disabilities, who require assistance to maintain stable housing.

Community engagement remains a key component of the project, with BC Housing and the city hosting virtual information sessions to address questions and gather feedback from residents. As the project moves forward, these efforts aim to ensure a positive relationship between the new housing and the surrounding community.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in tackling homelessness in New Westminster, providing housing and the resources necessary for residents to rebuild their lives and thrive.

On Sunday, December 8, at 5:00 PM, Mercer Stadium in New Westminster will host a special charity soccer game organized by the New Westminster Soccer Club (NWSC). The event, featuring the clubโ€™s Division 1 womenโ€™s team, NWSC Blackout, is a fundraiser in support of the Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) Caring Neighbours program.

The Caring Neighbours initiative helps families in New Westminster during the holiday season by providing essential items and gifts. Donations of cash, gift cards, new unwrapped toys, clothing, personal care items (such as gloves, hats, socks, soap, and toothpaste), and other toiletries will be collected at the event. All contributions will go directly to local families in need through the program.

The game is set to be an exciting pre-Christmas celebration for the soccer community, with younger NWSC teams encouraged to attend. Families can enjoy quality soccer, hot chocolate, festive music, and a fun evening while supporting a meaningful cause.

โ€œEvery year, my teams try to give back to the community,โ€ said the coach of both NWSC Blackout and the U15 Girls Division 3 Nighthawks. Over the years, NWSC teams have supported food security programs like Donโ€™t Go Hungry and organized food bank drives. This marks the first time the club is partnering with FSGV, with hopes of making it an annual tradition.

The event also aims to inspire younger players, particularly teenage girls, to continue participating in sports. NWSC is committed to fostering skill development, fair play, and long-term involvement in soccer for players of all ages, from U4 to adults.

How to Help:
Attendees are encouraged to bring donations to the game or make cash contributions on-site. Your support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of New Westminster families this holiday season.
