The founders of the Vivo Children’s Choir are inviting former members, their families, and the community to a special reunion and Christmas concert as they prepare to bid farewell to the choir they created two decades ago.
Founded in 2002 by accomplished musicians and music educators Carrie Taylor, Anne Wilson Unger, and Ingrid Verseveldt, the New Westminster-based choir was formed to provide a local musical outlet for children. While Verseveldt retired two years ago, Taylor and Wilson Unger will lead their final performance at the Vivo Winter Concert on December 7 before officially retiring.
Reunion and Final Concert Details
The choir is hosting an alumni dress rehearsal on Thursday, December 5, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Olivet Baptist Church, 613 Queens Avenue. Alumni are invited to reconnect, reminisce, and join the founders in singing a selection of songs from the upcoming concert. Even if alumni cannot attend the main event, this rehearsal provides an opportunity to be part of the choir one last time.
The Vivo Winter Concert and Celebration will take place on Saturday, December 7, at 3:30 p.m. at New Westminster Christian Reformed Church, 8255 13th Avenue, Burnaby. Alumni are encouraged to arrive at 3:00 p.m., and doors will open to the public at 3:15 p.m. Following the concert, which runs from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., a reception will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Tickets for the concert are available online, and alumni can sign up for the events via the choir’s website. For more information, interested participants can email [email protected].
A Legacy of Connection and Community
Taylor, Wilson Unger, and Verseveldt founded the choir after realizing there were few local options for their children to sing. “We all had children, and we had nowhere locally for them to sing,” Wilson Unger explained. “So, we just went, ‘We all have degrees in music; let’s start a choir.’”
Open to children aged seven to 14, the non-auditioned, all-inclusive choir has welcomed hundreds of participants over the years. For many children, singing in the choir provided a formative experience, offering a sense of teamwork and belonging. “Choirs are connecting,” Wilson Unger said. “It’s a community. It’s a team.”
The founders emphasized the emotional and physical benefits of collective singing, which fosters a deep connection among members. For children who may not gravitate toward team sports like lacrosse or baseball, the choir has served as an alternative space to build camaraderie and creativity.
Looking Back on Two Decades of Music
Over 22 years, the choir has brought together children, parents, and volunteers, creating lasting friendships and memories. Reflecting on the impact of their work, the founders expressed gratitude for the relationships they built with choir families and the broader community.
As they prepare to pass the baton to new artistic director Melodie Langevin in January, the founders anticipate an emotional farewell. “It’ll be very emotional,” Wilson Unger shared. “It will be hard to say goodbye to that many years and that many kids. But it feels good to have done it.”
Join the founders and celebrate the legacy of the Vivo Children’s Choir at the reunion and Christmas concert, marking the end of an era for one of New Westminster’s cherished musical institutions.
Following a hugely successful inaugural season, the New Westminster Minor Ball Hockey Association (NWMBHA) is thrilled to announce the opening of registration for the 2025 season. Boys and girls born between 2009 and 2018 (U9 to U17 divisions) are welcome to return or join for the first time, and the association is especially excited to introduce a brand-new U7 division for players born in 2019 and 2020.
With a focus on inclusivity, teamwork, and skill development, NWMBHA provides a supportive environment that allows young athletes to thrive on and off the court. Offering co-ed divisions from U7 to U17, the association ensures a fun, competitive play for all participants.
To meet the overwhelming response from last year, parents are encouraged to register early to guarantee their child’s spot. Registration fees, payment details, and additional information about the sport of ball hockey can be found on the NWMBHA website.
Season Timeline
Evaluations: Starting the last week of March 2025
Regular Season: Beginning the first week of April 2025
The specific practice and game schedules will be posted once floor allocations are confirmed by the City of New Westminster.
About NWMBHA
NWMBHA is dedicated to fostering a love for ball hockey by creating a safe and engaging environment where players can develop their skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork. With no skates or ice required, the sport offers an accessible way for youth to stay active and build friendships.
Join the Knights for an unforgettable Spring 2025 season, and help make it even better than the last. Secure your spot today and become part of the growing ball hockey family in New Westminster.
