Few desserts embody the festive spirit of Christmas quite like panettone, a traditional Italian sweet bread with a history as rich as its flavor. Legend has it that during a grand Christmas feast hosted by the Duke of Milan, the dessert was accidentally burned. A resourceful young cook named Toni created a rich brioche bread filled with raisins and candied fruit to save the day. The Duke loved it, and thus the โPane di Toniโ was born. Over time, panettone became more than just a dessertโit evolved into a symbol of liberty in Italy in 1821 and remains an enduring part of Italian Christmas celebrations.
This holiday season, you can bring the authentic taste of Italy to your table with panettone from Gastronomia Italia, located in the heart of historic downtown New Westminster. Gastronomia Italia is a hub for fine Italian foods, offering a curated selection of imported products and handcrafted delicacies. Owned and operated by Chef Delbert Cirfera, the shop serves artisan sandwiches, Roman-style pizza, and baked goods made fresh daily, ensuring peak flavor and quality.
For the holidays, their classic panettone is a must-tryโa fluffy, golden loaf studded with dried fruits and candied citrus peel, made with love and tradition. Whether shared with family or gifted to loved ones, itโs the perfect way to celebrate the holidays in true Italian style.
Visit Gastronomia Italia to pick up your own panettone, browse their D.O.P.-certified deli meats and cheeses, or enjoy an authentic Italian coffee and dessert. Buon Appetito!

Ewen Avenue - Queensborough
Residents of New Westminster are raising urgent concerns about the safety of the intersection at 6th Avenue and 2nd Street, a critical crossing for students attending LโEcole Herbert Spencer Elementary and Glenbrook Middle School. Parents, families, and local residents have come together to petition the City of New Westminster for immediate action, citing a troubling history of vehicular accidents and near-misses at the intersection, which lies within a school zone.
The intersection sees heavy daily foot traffic from students, parents, and elderly residents navigating the busy area. Despite the presence of crossing guards during school hours, many have witnessed alarming close calls with speeding vehicles or drivers ignoring signals. Concerns are heightened outside regular school hours when crossing guards are not present but children are still traveling for before- and after-school programs.
One parent recounted a harrowing experience of pulling her daughter and nieces back from the curb as a speeding car ignored the crossing. Another recalled a recent crash that sent a vehicle onto the sidewalk where a child had been standing just minutes earlier. Such incidents have underscored the urgent need for better traffic management and safety measures at this pedestrian-heavy intersection.
Statistics from Transport Canada highlight the broader risks facing children near schools, with an average of 43 deaths and 3,000 serious injuries involving child pedestrians annually. Community members fear that without action, this intersection could contribute to these troubling figures.
The petition calls on the City of New Westminster to implement immediate and lasting safety upgrades at the 6th Avenue and 2nd Street intersection. Potential measures could include better traffic signaling, clearer pedestrian markings, reduced speed limits, or even structural changes to manage traffic flow. Improved safety would benefit not only students but also elderly and disabled community members who rely on the crosswalk.
Residents are urging others to sign the petition to protect the community's children and prevent future tragedies.
Please, sign this petition and lend your voice to this urgent and worthwhile cause.
